My son seems to be getting interested in magic. I've shown him some coin tricks and he wants to do some magic himself. Figuring he's a bit to young (he's about to turn 5) to learn to palm coins I was thinking of getting him a box set of tricks (I remember my Paul Daniels Magic Set with fondness!).

There seem to be quite a lot of different sets out there, possibly aimed at slightly older kids.

Does anyone have a good recommendation, or perhaps an alternative suggestion as to how he could start?

Many thanks

Hi Alan,

For a 5 year old you will definitely need something specially for that age, as the lowest recommended age for the kids magic sets are age 5.

The best suggestions I can give are sets like the following:

When he turns about 7-8 there are more box sets, and he should be able to understand some of the beginner tricks that are sold sepperately.

A great trick is the Dynamic Coins.. which a 6 yr old could probably perform with a little guidance. It's visual and very easy to perform:

Many thanks,

I hope this helps, All the best, Anthony

I have a four year old daughter who is mad about magic and want to do what daddy does. It is difficult to teach a lot of trick to a child of that age. I have done several things. I got a set similar to the one that James recommends, there is one available (I hope James has it if not I am sure he can get hold of one for you.) Instead of having all the plastic and cardboard props the props are made of wood which is better for a young child.

I use my daughter as an assistant and let her perform magic with me rather than on her own. Slowly I introduce a little bit more for her to do. At that age they want to be involved as much as possible. Use the opportunity to do something that is special for the two of you. Work on a small show for grandparents or mum. Let them take center stage and give them all the praise. It doesn't matter if it it is obvious as long as they believe they are performing. Grandparents love it and play along with the young magician.

At four they should be focusing on large motor skills, which this is ideal for so as well as having fun they are starting to write. I will try and post the name of the wooden magic set on here later.

Nic

Thank you both for your advice. I'll investigate the sets recommended.

Nic - do you have the details on the wooden set you mentioned?

Also, I really like the idea of performing the tricks together to start with and gradually increasing the amount he does. And you're absolutely right: his grandparents will love it.

Many thanks

Alan

Although it says 8 years plus it is a great set for a younger child to use with a parent andyou can add other effects to it. The small switch bag will entertain young children. In my childrens show I have used a switch bag in the past to turn sweet wrappers that are left after Charlie the chimp has eaten the sweets. He the uses magic to change the wrappers to sweets that the children can eat.
